Frequently Asked Questions

I am not from the New Brighton area. Can I join nevertheless?
Not at this point but please feel free to pass on your details. If we know of a Time Bank developing in your area or if you are keen to help start one we can help you get on the right track.  The Lyttleton Time Bank is happy to accept indivduals from outside their area as they are better established.  See their link on the 'community links' page.

Is there a sign up fee or even a yearly fee involved?
No, membership is FREE although we greatly appreciate any donations of money or time towards fundraising activities or Time Bank operations.

Does my membership include a certain number of time credits when I sign up?
No but you do not need them as we encourage you to start trading right away and if this means accepting services before you accrue credits, that is great too!

How much debt can I accumulate?
We have no set limit, if an individual is requiring more services then they can repay with time credit we will work with them to come to a suitable arrangement.

What if services that are being offered are of no interest to me?
Services offered will change over time.  You can keep checking back but you can also list a request for a service that you would like.

Can I offer something I also do professionally?
At this point no you cannot offer the same skills as those that you perform in your primary occupation.  We are still waiting for some clarification of this issue from the IRD and will let our members know if and when this changes.

How will people contact me?
Trade arrangements can be made through the exchange of messages within the online programme or by phone if the contact number is provided.  Offline users carry out their trading through the coordinator or a time bank buddy.

I don’t have a computer. Can I join nevertheless?
Yes you can!  Please call the coordinator to learn more about offline trading.

Can people join as a couple/household/family or do they all have to join individually?
Yes, you can do whatever you prefer.  Each membership account has to have its own seperate email address but a family can use just one account.

What if I am not happy with the service I have received?
Contact your coordinator to advise of any problems or concerns with your trade. We cannot guarentee the success of each trade but will monitor trading activity and remove members from the system if required.  We encourage you to ask members about their experience and skills when arranging a trade.  Before trading making sure all the details are worked out ahead of time including how expenses will be reimbursed will make the trade easier and more likely to meet your expectations.

When offering a service can I ask for a contribution towards my actual costs?
The cost of materials, fuel, etc. should be taken into consideration for any trade.  These are not to be paid for in time so discuss costs ahead of time and arrange how much materials will be and how they will be paid for before the trade takes place.

Can I get time credits for loaning something out?
Yes you can.  If someone borrows something from you the standard amount is 15 min to cover any time spent making the arrangement.  We also encourage a gold coin donation towards items that are susceptible to wear and tear or maintance costs (like trailers).

I’d like to support this project but don’t feel I have got much time to give.  What can I do?
Sometimes Time Banking can you make you richer in time!  If someone helps you with a task that takes them one and it would take you three, you have saved yourself two hours and hopefully have made a new friend in the process!  Maybe two new friends when you pay for that hour by doing a service you enjoy! Remember, all trading is arranged by you so you can give as much or as little time as you want and when you want to give it!

Can I decline someone’s offer of service simply because it doesn’t feel right?
Of course, each trade is arranged to suit the schedule and requirements of both parties.  You are under no obligation to undertake a trade if you are not satisfied with the arrangement or have any concerns.  If there is a particular concern or problem please contact your coordinator.
